Halifax Water’s fleet sees serious return on investment
Managing the water supply system in a busy urban centre requires a lot of driving. Halifax Water serves thousands of customers every day and uses fleet tracking from Northern Business Intelligence to create efficiencies in their fleet.
The GPS fleet tracking project has been a success. Peter White, Supervisor, Fleet and Buildings, says, “From a return on investment perspective we were able to recoup the capital investment in less than 12 months based on reduced kilometres driven.”
He goes on to say the amount of kilometers driven has decreased substantially since the GPS tracking project began. “Our fleet (212 units) now travels 3.35 million kilometres per year. When we implemented the system our Fleet (195 Units) travelled 3.75 Million kilometres per year.”
Reduce idle time and increase productivity
White also says idling data was an area of focus and their drivers have successfully cut a significant amount of idling out of their daily activities. “From an idling management perspective, we have reduced idling by approximately 30% in our small vehicle fleet.
While changes in productivity are challenging to quantify, Halifax Water has observed changes in driver behaviour that benefit their operations. He says, “Increased productivity is difficult to measure, but our vehicles do much less unnecessary driving, so therefore we do spend more time on our work sites.”
The GPS data tells a proud story and, for Halifax Water, GPS tracking implementation has achieved a significant return on investment.
“From a return on investment perspective, we were able to recoup the capital investment in less than 12 months based on reduced kilometres driven.”
