Guildfords builds safer driving habits with Geotab telematics

Published on March 11, 2024

Guildfords, headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, boasts over a century of experience as a versatile construction company, catering to the needs of buildings, ships, and refineries. As a player in the construction sector, Guildfords consistently prioritizes safety for its employees. To keep its materials in motion, Guildfords runs a fleet of 30 vehicles consisting of mostly Ford 150s. As the company’s Safety Advisor, Jeremy Fukala, is responsible for monitoring his team’s driving behaviours while on the road. Since having introduced Geotab telematics, it didn’t take long for Jeremy to discover the additional benefits fleet management technology brings to the table.

Vehicle information is available right away

Before joining Guildfords, Jeremy had never used fleet telematics before. He relied on pen and paper while chasing down coworkers for information. Now, thanks to Geotab, all the information he needs is readily available. “I’m really impressed with how easy and organized it is to get the information I need,” says Jeremy. With only a few clicks, he’s able to answer questions without needing to chase people. “It’s been a great time saver and benefit to our business.” The Geotab reports have also given Jeremy further insight into when it’s time to consider replacing a higher mileage vehicle, or if it can be repurposed to a different branch location.

Building safer habits through the “seatbelt rule”

Implementing Geotab has helped build safer habits among Guildfords’ drivers. Everybody knows buckling your seatbelt is the simplest way of keeping passengers safe, but not everybody does it. With Geotab’s reporting functions, administrators can make seatbelt checks part of their regular safety routine. By turning on the seatbelt rule in MyGeotab, the GO device tracks seatbelt violations. Alerts can also be set up to notify drivers when they’re driving without their seatbelt. Seatbelt violations detected by Geotab has provided coaching opportunities from Jeremy and the Guildfords team to develop safer and more conscientious habits on the road. Not only is wearing a seatbelt required by law, but wearing a seatbelt can reduce the risk of injuries by 60 percent!

Checking the map to ensure drivers arrive safely

Geotab’s map feature is a frequently used tool for Jeremy – especially when drivers are travelling between worksites. “We want our drivers to be safe on the roads,” Jeremy comments. “I like to travel to different sites, so I like seeing who will be there along the way.”

The telemetry data doesn’t lie

Knowing the challenges he’s faced without using telematics in the past, Jeremy’s been able to keep track of potential issues presented to him through the Geotab data. “The telemetry data doesn’t lie,” says Jeremy. “With this data, it’s helped me get straight to the facts when undergoing my investigations”. Geotab’s near-miss detection will notify fleet managers of incidents, such as harsh braking, acceleration and more, based on the g-force data. The g-force data varies between each vehicle, so ensuring rules are set based on the make and model will help ensure the most accurate detections.

Geotab data helps increase driver communication

Open communication between drivers and Jeremy has increased with Geotab. “For example, drivers have come to me to let me know there will be a speeding infraction on their trip history, explains Jeremy. “It keeps drivers aware and honest about their habits”. Guildfords’ fleet manager and administrator run monthly reports and have benefitted from having driver behaviours available right away.

Data makes for better coaching and training

Using telematics has opened opportunities for driver coaching as well. “We can talk about safe driving and what is acceptable,” says Jeremy. In previous roles, without telematics in place, it wasn’t as easy to understand which habits needed coaching. “I’d rather coach the drivers now while we know there’s an issue, rather than waiting for something to happen”. Understanding how the data works has helped him with coaching drivers, rather than disciplining them. “We’re just looking to build better habits”.

Jeremy has also been able to take what he’s learned from the Geotab data and implement it into the internal driving program. “With our telematics data, I’ve been able to see what our biggest issues are and train new employees on what we’re looking for. It sets a better precedence for our new drivers. It’s good for transparency and trust”.
