Canadian ELD Mandate certification update

Geotab Canadian ELD mandate certification update

On June 12, 2021, the first phase of the Canadian ELD mandate came into effect for federally regulated motor carriers and buses as per the guidelines put in place by Transport Canada. As of yet, there are no third-party certified devices listed on Transport Canada’s website. We want to ensure customers that Geotab has been working diligently with the CSA Group, a global third-party certification body, to obtain its Canadian ELD certification for the past several months. As things progress, Geotab expects certification to be achieved by the end of June 2021. Northern BI will update clients as soon as we receive information from our partners at Geotab.

Progressive enforcement period

Unlike the self-certification process used in the U.S. ELD mandate, Transport Canada has implemented a third-party certification process. At present, a list of certification bodies is available. Geotab is complying with all requirements and is continuing to pursue full certification. On March 2, 2021, the Transport Minister announced a progressive enforcement period, of up to 12 months. This means that all fleets will now have more time after the mandate deadline to become compliant, allowing more time for education, implementation, and adaptation to the new regulatory environment
